After the siege of Luxembourg by the French in 1543, parts of the upper town and the Clausen district lay in ruins. This complete destruction made it possible to repurpose the area during reconstruction. The Count of Mansfeld, the governor of Luxembourg, acquired land in Clausen, Fetschenhof, and Weimershof. Starting in 1564, he began building his residence, “La Fontaine,” in the valley outside the city walls. A large entrance building marked the access to the new estate. At the time, it already housed a brewery, and today it is home to a restaurant, the “Brasserie Mansfeld.”
