The pleasure gardens were terraced into three levels parallel to the canalized course of the river Alzette. Each area was enhanced by fountains and water features, and had a special theme, – such as the hanging garden, the grottoes, the orchard, the potager, the flower garden, the maze, the bathhouse and the aviary island. Pavilions, arbour walks, hedges, alleys, statues, stairs and porticoes were the key ingredients to the architectural landscape setting.
