Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Our Valley, Vianden Castle is one of the most impressive feudal castles in Europe. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries
on the foundations of an ancient Roman castellum and a Carolingian refuge, it served as the residence of the powerful Counts of Vianden until the 15th century.
Over the centuries, the castle underwent several architectural transformations, incorporating Romanesque and Gothic elements, and in the 17th century, a Renaissance-style wing was added.
In 1820, under the reign of William I of Orange-Nassau, the castle was sold to a private
individual who dismantled it, selling off building materials and decorative elements, reducing it to a ruin. It remained in this state until 1977, when the Luxembourg State acquired it and launched an extensive restoration program, meticulously respecting its original architecture.
Today, Vianden Castle is a leading national and European monument. It has even been named one of the world’s most beautiful castles by CNN. It offers a unique journey into medieval history and hosts exhibitions on medieval life, cultural events, and breathtaking panoramic views of the region. Every summer, a medieval festival brings the Middle Ages to life with entertainment, shows, and historical reenactments.
